The UKG Telestaff community is unique in that most users have the primary role of citizen service, but when workforce scheduling automation becomes imperative for the organization, these same people are thrust into the role of managing the scheduling application as an additional responsibility of their position. The adoption of Telestaff to automate scheduling and time management processes comes as a welcomed addition to public safety organizations, but with the adoption of any software technology solution, there are always opportunities to maximize optimal performance and to drive operational efficiencies.

Database EvolutionSome Historical Perspective:
Relational databases have long been the backbone of the Telestaff product. In the early days of PDSI, data was stored in a Sybase database. As Telestaff evolved, so did its database technology, transitioning to Microsoft SQL Server (MS SQL)—a widely adopted and powerful database platform. Now, in 2025, UKG Telestaff is actively working to migrate customers from on-premise and Kronos Private Cloud (KPC) environments to the modern, secure Google Cloud Platform (GCP) with PostgreSQL as the back end database.
With evolution comes challenges, and challenges inspire innovation. During the Sybase-to-MS SQL transition, two creative thinkers, and Telestaff users from Greensboro, N.C. developed a toolset and process for seamless data conversion. This next major evolution—from MS SQL to PostgreSQL—will once again demand resourceful teams to develop new tools and processes to tackle today’s challenges and shape the future of Telestaff.


Custom Reports:
Data drives insight, and Telestaff contains a wealth of data. Data can be leveraged through custom reports. Tools like Microsoft Power BI provide for an interface to enhance the legacy Eclipse, Business Intelligence Reporting Tool (BIRT).
Brain Gear Tech can provide simple to complex, custom reports to extract the data you seek. 


Focused Training & User Adoption:

Brain Gear Tech offers focused training to provide you or your team a better understanding of a particular TeleStaff element or configuration.
We assist with creating new work codes, implementing new rules, and launching dynamic issues to meet the needs of your Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA's). 

Dynamic Issues:
Dynamic issues provide a powerful method of incorporating adhesion to CBA's and city policies, and building dynamic issues can be very challenging. Maybe you are struggling to create the proper logic for a dynamic issue or perhaps you are wondering if you should be employing a certain rule. Perhaps you need to use both, or possibly you may need to build new work codes. Brain Gear Tech can provide you a solution and assist with the adoption of the solution.  

Auto Tasks:
One of TeleStaff’s primary missions is process automation, and TeleStaff relies heavily on the Auto Task feature to drive automaton. Perhaps your Battalion Chief needs a daily roster emailed to them before morning shift change. An Auto task can email a custom report to the Battalion Chief.
